New Delhi, Sept 30: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has declared at least 54 private state universities across the country as defaulters for failing to submit mandatory information under Section 13 of the UGC Act, 1956, and not making required disclosures on their websites, officials said on Tuesday.
The higher education regulator said repeated reminders were issued through e-mails and online meetings, directing these universities to furnish detailed information for inspection along with registrar-attested documents. They were also told to upload the filled-in formats and appendices on their websites with a direct link on the homepage to ensure easy access for students and the public.
“Despite repeated reminders, these institutions have not complied. Universities were categorically directed to make information accessible to everyone without login or registration, with a proper search facility for navigation,” UGC Secretary Manish Joshi said.
According to the list, Madhya Pradesh tops the tally with 10 defaulting universities, followed by Gujarat (8), Sikkim (5) and Uttarakhand (4).
The UGC has circulated the names of the defaulting institutions and warned them to take corrective steps immediately, cautioning that further action could follow if they continue to ignore the directions.
In recent months, the Commission has stepped up monitoring of private universities. In July, it had issued notices to 23 institutions for failing to appoint ombudspersons, a mandatory requirement for grievance redressal.
