Chamoli (Uttarakhand), Sep 18: At least 12 people were reported missing on Thursday morning after torrential rains triggered landslides that buried several houses under debris in Nandanagar area of Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. District authorities have launched a massive search and rescue operation with the help of SDRF and NDRF teams.
The incident comes just two days after a cloudburst killed 23 people in Dehradun and nearby districts, causing flash floods and multiple landslides across the state.
Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari confirmed that 10 to 12 houses were completely damaged in Thursday’s incident. “We anticipate this number could be higher. Some shops have also been affected. SDRF, NDRF, and local tehsil teams have moved to the affected areas. We are trying to open the blocked roads with JCB machines. We hope relief teams will reach the affected areas in the next 30–45 minutes. Relief centers have been identified, and we will shift local people there as soon as possible,” Tiwari said.
According to officials, eight people are missing from Kuntari Lagafali village, two from Dhurma, and two from Sarpani. Those missing in Kuntari Lagafali have been identified as Kunwar Singh (42), his wife Kanta Devi (38), their sons Vikas and Vishal (10), Narendra Singh (40), Jagdamba Prasad (70), Bhaga Devi (6), and Deveshwari Devi (65). In Dhurma, Guman Singh (75) and Mamta Devi (38) are missing.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has already reached Nandprayag, where road connectivity was cut off due to debris, while a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has been dispatched from Gauchar to join rescue efforts.
Authorities have warned of the possibility of more damage if heavy rains continue, even as rescue teams race against time to locate the missing and evacuate residents from vulnerable areas.
