Ravi Shankar Prasad accuses Rahul Gandhi of ‘weakening democracy’ with ‘vote theft’ claims

Patna, Sept 19: Senior BJP leader and former Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Friday launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of “systematically and deliberately trying to weaken democracy” with his allegations of “vote chori” (vote theft) against the Election Commission.

Addressing reporters in Patna, Prasad dismissed Gandhi’s remarks as “baseless, mischievous and misleading.”

“Rahul Gandhi is trying to create anarchy in the country. By repeatedly making false allegations, he is lowering the dignity of the post of the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha,” Prasad said.

Referring to Gandhi’s post on X, where he urged the youth and students to “save the Constitution, protect democracy and stop vote theft,” Prasad alleged that the Congress leader was “trying to promote violence in the country.”

On Thursday, Gandhi had accused the Election Commission of shielding “vote thieves” and demanded that it provide information sought by the Karnataka CID on alleged voter deletions in the Aland assembly seat during the 2023 polls. He also flagged alleged voter fraud in Maharashtra’s Rajura constituency.

Prasad countered the charges, saying the EC had already investigated the matter thoroughly in 2023. “Whatever questions Rahul Gandhi is raising today were replied to earlier. Congress is in power in Karnataka. The Congress candidate even won from Aland. What was his government doing?” he asked.

He also accused Gandhi of “abusing the democratic choice of voters” by questioning parliamentary elections held in 2014, 2019 and 2024. “Congress will have to face the consequences. People will give them a proper reply through the democratic process, and they will suffer another humiliating defeat in the coming polls,” Prasad said.
