SRINAGAR, Aug 2: Jammu and Kashmir has been placed under a high security alert ahead of the sixth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, with security forces stepping up surveillance and launching an intensified manhunt for the terrorists involved in the recent attacks in Anantnag and Kulgam districts.
Security has been beefed up across the Union Territory, particularly in vulnerable areas of Kashmir, with additional deployments of the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF and other central forces. Multi-layered security arrangements have been put in place at vital installations, government offices, markets, transport hubs, religious places and other sensitive locations to prevent any untoward incident.
Officials said frisking, vehicle checking and area domination patrols have been intensified across the Valley, while checkpoints have been strengthened on major highways and key roads. Surveillance has also been enhanced with the use of drones and other technical equipment, and intelligence agencies are maintaining close coordination to track any suspicious activity.
The heightened security comes in the wake of the recent terror attacks in south Kashmir, including the killing of two migrant labourers in Kulgam and a police personnel in Anantnag. Security forces have launched extensive search operations in the forested and mountainous areas of the two districts to track down the militants responsible for the attacks.
Army, police and paramilitary personnel are conducting coordinated operations, supported by technical surveillance and human intelligence, as part of an intensified effort to locate and neutralise the fleeing terrorists. Officials said the operations will continue until those involved are brought to justice.
Security agencies have also strengthened the anti-infiltration grid along the Line of Control and the International Border amid apprehensions that terrorist groups may attempt to exploit the anniversary to carry out disruptive activities.
Senior officers have been reviewing the security arrangements on a daily basis, directing field formations to remain on maximum alert and ensure seamless coordination among all security agencies.
Officials said every possible measure has been put in place to ensure the peaceful observance of August 5, while urging people to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious movement or activity to the police.
The anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 has traditionally witnessed heightened security across Jammu and Kashmir, with authorities leaving little to chance in view of potential threats from terrorist groups. This year, the security grid has been further strengthened following the recent attacks in south Kashmir and the ongoing operations to track down the perpetrators.
