India, Maldives Reaffirm Strategic Defence Partnership in High-Level Talks

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh and Maldives Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon held extensive discussions in New Delhi on January 8, 2025, solidifying their commitment to the India-Maldives Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership. The bilateral talks reviewed defence and security cooperation, underscoring the shared vision of regional peace and prosperity.

Reaffirming India’s ‘Neighborhood First’ policy and the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) framework, Rajnath Singh assured India’s continued support in bolstering Maldives’ defence capabilities. This includes the provision of defence platforms and resources aligned with Malé’s national priorities. Minister Maumoon expressed gratitude for India’s historic role as the Maldives’ ‘First Responder’ and acknowledged its contributions to enhancing defence infrastructure and personnel training.

During the discussions, India handed over defence equipment and stores at the Maldives’ request, reinforcing trust and collaboration. Minister Maumoon’s maiden official visit to India marks a significant chapter in the two nations’ enduring partnership, aiming to strengthen security in the Indian Ocean Region through mutual cooperation.
