Man Who Attacked Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Sent to Five-Day Police Remand

New Delhi, Aug 20: The man accused of attacking Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a jan sunvai programme, identified as Rajesh Khimji, has been remanded to five days of police custody, officials said on Wednesday.

Police have registered a case under Section 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) pertaining to attempt to murder, which carries a punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment and fine. Khimji was brought to Civil Lines Police Station earlier in the day after his arrest.

Officials said the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Delhi Police Special Cell interrogated Khimji on Wednesday. Investigations revealed that Khimji had travelled from Rajkot to Delhi by train on August 19 and stayed at Gujarati Bhavan in Civil Lines before carrying out the attack.

CCTV footage from the Chief Minister’s residence in Shalimar Bagh has surfaced, showing Khimji conducting a recce and making videos of the premises prior to the attack. The Delhi Chief Minister’s Office confirmed that the footage has been handed over to the police for further investigation.

“It is seen in the footage that the attacker did a recce of the Chief Minister’s residence, made a video of the place and attempted the attack in a planned manner. This video has been handed over to the police, and an intensive investigation is going on in this regard,” a CMO statement said.

Reacting to the incident, CM Gupta said she was shocked but recovering. “The attack on me during this morning’s public hearing was not just an attack on me, but a cowardly attempt on our resolve to serve Delhi and work for the welfare of the people. Naturally, I was in shock after this attack, but now I am feeling better,” she wrote in a post on X.

She further thanked her well-wishers, adding, “I express my heartfelt gratitude for your immense love, blessings, and good wishes.”
