Doda, Sept 15: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has blocked over 100 social media handles that were allegedly being used to incite violence, spread misinformation, and disrupt peace in Doda and Kishtwar districts. Officials confirmed that some of these accounts were operated from across the border in Pakistan with the intent to destabilize the region.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Doda, Sandeep Mehta, said the step was necessary to curb the circulation of fake news, old videos, hate speeches, and other provocative content aimed at creating communal tension and public disorder. He warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone found sharing unverified or incendiary material.
“Disseminating misinformation on social media is a serious offense under the Information Technology Act and the Indian Penal Code. Citizens must exercise caution and ensure the authenticity of any content before forwarding it,” SSP Mehta cautioned.
He also referred to an earlier order issued by the District Magistrate (No. 3471-74/DM Doda dated 03.09.2025), which highlighted the need for responsible online behavior and warned against rumor-mongering.
Authorities have appealed to residents to immediately report misleading or inflammatory posts to local police stations or use official helplines. “Maintaining peace and harmony is our foremost priority. We urge the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and help counter misinformation,” SSP Mehta said.
The police reiterated that monitoring of digital platforms will continue and any attempt to misuse them for disturbing public order will be dealt with firmly.
