SRINAGAR, Jan 13: In a remarkable technological achievement, soldiers stationed at the Siachen Glacier, the highest battlefield on Earth, can now access high-speed internet services, the Indian Army announced on Monday.
The Army’s Fire & Fury Corps, in partnership with Jio Telecom, has successfully installed the first-ever 5G mobile tower at Siachen Glacier, significantly improving communication capabilities for the soldiers deployed in one of the most challenging environments on the planet.
“This indomitable feat is dedicated to our brave soldiers who serve under extreme conditions,” the Fire & Fury Corps shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Our Signallers and Siachen warriors, braving extreme temperatures plunging below -40 degrees Celsius and treacherous terrain, installed the 5G base station at North Glacier.”
Reliance Jio became the first telecom operator to bring seamless connectivity to the region, marking a significant milestone for communication in such harsh, remote locations.
A spokesperson for Jio stated that the telecom giant leveraged its indigenous full-stack 5G technology, deploying plug-and-play pre-configured equipment at a forward post. This effort was made possible through extensive collaboration with the Army’s Signallers, including rigorous planning, multiple training sessions, and system pre-configuration, followed by comprehensive testing.
The Indian Army’s logistical support was crucial in airlifting Jio’s equipment to the glacier, ensuring the success of this initiative in one of the most inhospitable regions in the world.
The new 5G mobile tower now provides connectivity at an altitude of 16,000 feet in the Karakoram Range, an area notorious for its extreme conditions, where temperatures can plummet to -50 degrees Celsius. This breakthrough represents a significant advancement in both military operations and the welfare of soldiers stationed in one of the harshest environments on Earth.
