SRINAGAR, Jan 19: The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has forecast a three-day wet spell starting Monday, with rain and snow expected in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the MeT office, dry weather will prevail in the plains on Sunday, with light rain or snow likely over higher reaches.
From January 20 to 21, isolated to scattered places in Jammu and Kashmir may experience light snowfall, while the plains of Jammu could see light rain. On January 22, the forecast indicates light to moderate rain in Jammu’s plains and snowfall in many areas across Jammu and Kashmir, including the higher reaches of the Chenab Valley and the Pir Panjal Range.
Another spell of light to moderate rain in Jammu’s plains and snow in many parts of the Union Territory is anticipated on January 23, the MeT office added.
Temperatures in Kashmir Valley
Night temperatures showed improvement at several weather stations but remained below freezing across the Kashmir Valley.
- Srinagar: The summer capital recorded a low of -1°C during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, which is 1.0°C above normal for this time of year.
- Gulmarg: The famed ski resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district remained the coldest location in the valley, recording a low of -7.8°C, slightly up from -8.2°C the previous night but still 2.4°C above normal for the day.
- Pahalgam: The valley of shepherds recorded a low of -3°C, improving from -3.4°C the previous night and 3.3°C above normal.
- Kupwara: The frontier district registered a minimum of -2.6°C on Sunday, down from -1.3°C the previous night but still 0.3°C above normal.
- Kokernag: This south Kashmir spot saw a dip to -3.4°C compared to -2.8°C the night before, marking a slight rise of 0.1°C above the average.
- Qazigund: The gateway town to Kashmir recorded a minimum of -2.8°C, slightly down from -2.5°C a day earlier but still 0.3°C above normal for the season.
The Meteorological Department’s forecast serves as a reminder for residents and authorities to remain prepared for changing weather conditions in the coming days.
