Srinagar, Feb 03: In a tragic incident that underscores the rising trend of targeted killings in Kashmir, terrorists opened fire on Manzoor Ahmad Wagay and his family in Behibagh, Kulgam. The 39-year-old ex-serviceman succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital, while his wife, Mrs. Aaina Akhtar (32), and niece, Miss Saina Hameed (13), sustained injuries but are reported to be in stable condition.
Security forces reported that, “In a brutal act of terror, three innocent citizens—Manzoor Ahmad Wagay (Ex-Serviceman), his wife Mrs. Aaina Akhtar, and niece Miss Saina Hameed—were shot at by terrorists. Manzoor succumbed to his injuries, while the others have been evacuated to District Hospital Anantnag.”
Describing the attack as cowardly, the Army condemned the assailants, stating, “This targeted killing is a clear attempt by hostile elements to undermine peace and stability in Kashmir. The senseless violence shows that even innocent women and children are not spared. A Joint Cordon and Search Operation has been launched in Behibagh to apprehend those responsible.”
A joint team of police, paramilitary forces, and the Army quickly cordoned off the area, initiating a search operation to locate the attackers. Sources indicated that Wagay was shot in the abdomen, while his family members sustained leg injuries.
This attack is part of a disturbing pattern of targeted killings that have intensified in the region. Just last month, an Indian Army soldier was killed during an encounter with terrorists in Sopore, highlighting the ongoing security challenges faced by the region.
In a separate incident in October, two soldiers and two civilian porters were killed when terrorists ambushed an Indian Army vehicle in Gulmarg. The attack occurred in the Botapathri area and further demonstrates the threat posed to both security personnel and civilians in the area.
Moreover, earlier this week, a labourer identified as Pritam Singh from Uttar Pradesh was shot and injured in the Batgund Tral area of Pulwama. This incident marked the third attack on non-local labourers within a week, raising alarms about the safety of those working in the region.
With the frequency of targeted killings on the rise, both locals and non-locals remain on high alert as the region grapples with escalating violence.
