SRINAGAR, Feb 23: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday said the government is in discussions with private investors to enhance skiing infrastructure at the renowned winter destination of Gulmarg.
Speaking to reporters at the hill station in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, Abdullah revealed that talks are underway with private players interested in expanding Gulmarg’s facilities. “We are engaging with investors who are keen on developing new skiing infrastructure. If a solid proposal comes through, we will move forward with it,” he said.
The chief minister also announced that a helicopter will now be available throughout the year for heli-skiing and sightseeing. “This season, snowfall has been limited, but skiers are still enjoying the slopes. Starting today, heli-skiing operations will commence, and visitors can also take aerial tours of Gulmarg’s scenic beauty. Unlike before, the helicopter will be operational year-round for both skiing and safari experiences,” he added.
Abdullah further stated that the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation is working on plans to develop new cable car projects in the region.
On the postponed Khelo India Games, which were originally scheduled to begin on February 22 but were delayed due to inadequate snowfall, Abdullah said the government is waiting for clearer conditions before making an announcement. “There is a forecast of fresh snowfall over three days starting February 26. Once that happens, experts from the Ski Federation will assess the slopes. If they determine there is enough snow to conduct the games, we will announce new dates. Ideally, I would like them to be held in the first week of March; otherwise, rising temperatures could make it difficult this year,” he explained.
Addressing a question about the upcoming fasting month of Ramadan, Abdullah said he would soon convene a meeting to review preparations and ensure necessary arrangements are in place.
