Jammu, Feb 28: Continuous rain and snowfall over the past two days have led to devastating flash floods and landslides across Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in five deaths and leaving three people missing in four separate incidents.
In Poonch district, a passenger cab carrying a family plunged into the flooded Kalai river, leading to a massive rescue operation. Seven members of the family were pulled out alive after hours of effort by police, civil authorities, and local volunteers. However, three members, including a newborn, remain missing and are feared trapped in the river. Officials confirmed that the vehicle lost control amid heavy rainfall while returning from Poonch district hospital.
In another dramatic rescue, 11 labourers working at a construction site on the Ujh River in Kathua were saved from rising floodwaters. A joint team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and police reached the site and successfully evacuated all stranded workers before the situation worsened.
Meanwhile, a dumper truck driver was rescued from Niki Tawi after his vehicle was nearly submerged in a sudden flash flood. Identified as Mohan Lal of Om Nagar, Gole Gujral, he was seen clinging to the roof of his vehicle when authorities launched “Operation Rudder.” A police team led by PSI Balbir Singh, along with SDRF personnel, saved him in a swift and coordinated effort.
With rescue operations ongoing and the weather conditions still uncertain, authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, as rivers continue to swell and landslide-prone areas remain vulnerable.
