Budget Session Showdown: NC-Congress, BJP Brace for Heated Assembly Debates

Srinagar, Mar 3: The first budget session of the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory Legislative Assembly is set for an intense face-off as the ruling NC-Congress alliance and the opposition BJP gear up for fierce political battles.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a joint legislature party meeting of the National Conference (NC) and Congress in Jammu on Sunday, aiming to project unity amid speculation of internal rifts. The ruling alliance is bracing for opposition onslaughts over unfulfilled manifesto promises, including free electricity and subsidized rations.

The 28-member BJP plans to hold the government accountable on these issues while simultaneously opposing any discussion on the revocation of Article 370—a matter that Kashmir-based opposition parties, including PDP and PC, have placed at the heart of their legislative agenda. Both PDP and PC have submitted resolutions demanding its restoration, alongside calls for an alcohol ban in the Valley.

The BJP, meanwhile, is scheduled to finalize its strategy at a legislature party meeting in Jammu on March 2. The upcoming session, which marks the first full-fledged budget sitting of an elected government since 2018, follows a turbulent Assembly meet in Srinagar, where the BJP had vociferously opposed NC’s move to introduce a resolution seeking the restoration of J&K’s special status.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is set to present his maiden budget for the Union Territory on March 7. With proceedings scheduled until April 11, the Assembly is bracing for a politically charged session filled with high-stakes debates, disruptions, and fiery exchanges.
