Jammu, Mar 3: Marking a significant milestone in regional connectivity, authorities on Monday conducted the inaugural blast for the construction of the Bhimber Gali Tunnel on the Jammu-Poonch National Highway.
The 1.1-km-long tunnel is a vital component of the 16.1-km highway project, stretching from Kalali in Rajouri to Bhataduria in Poonch. Once completed, it will reduce travel distance by 10.8 km, significantly improving connectivity in the Pir Panjal region.
The inaugural blast was executed by BRO’s Project Sampark Chief Engineer Brig Neeraj Madan and Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Jammu Regional Officer A M Prasad. A traditional puja was conducted before the event, with senior officials from BRO and civil administration in attendance.
“This tunnel will enhance troop movement and facilitate civilian connectivity in the region,” a defence spokesman said.
The project follows the successful breakthrough of the 700-meter Naushera Tunnel on January 29, 2024, reinforcing the BRO’s commitment to infrastructure development in border areas.
“The Bhimber Gali Tunnel will not only boost regional accessibility but also contribute significantly to economic growth and national security,” Brig Madan said.
With the BRO spearheading strategic road projects in Rajouri and Poonch, the project stands as a testament to the government’s focus on enhancing defence and civilian infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.
