JAMMU, Mar 12: Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Sunil Sharma on Wednesday welcomed the Ministry of Home Affairs’ decision to ban the Awami Action Committee (AAC) and Jammu and Kashmir Ittehadul Muslimeen (JKIM) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), while launching a scathing attack on former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti for opposing the move.
“In Jammu and Kashmir, two organisations—Awami Action Committee, led by Maulvi Umar Farooq, and Ittehadul Muslimeen, led by Abbas Ansari—were working against India’s unity. Today, the Union Home Ministry has banned these separatist outfits, and we welcome this decisive action,” Sharma said. “No individual or organisation should be allowed to function against the integrity and sovereignty of the country.”
Taking aim at PDP President Mehbooba Mufti, Sharma accused her party of being built on a separatist foundation, aligning itself with groups like the Hurriyat and Jamaat-e-Islami. “Whenever radical and anti-India elements face action, Madam Mehbooba feels the pain, and it reflects in her statements,” he remarked.
Reacting to Congress leader Rashid Alvi’s remarks about alleged targeting of a particular community, Sharma said, “Parties like Congress have thrived on policies of division and appeasement, which go against the constitutional spirit. Such tactics are no longer acceptable.”
The Union Home Ministry has imposed a five-year ban on both AAC and JKIM, citing their involvement in activities detrimental to national security.
