J&K Govt Rules Out Reconsideration of Housing Plan for PM Package Employees

JAMMU, Mar 12: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday ruled out any reconsideration of its decision regarding the construction of accommodations for employees appointed under the Prime Minister’s Package for Kashmiri Migrants.

Responding to a query by MLA Mir Mohammad Fayaz in the Assembly, the Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation & Reconstruction (DMRRR) confirmed that 6,000 one-bedroom flats (1-BHK) were sanctioned under the Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP) 2015 for Kashmiri migrant employees at 20 different locations.

The sanctioned cost, initially set at ₹920 crore, has now escalated to ₹1,325.84 crore, the department stated.

However, under directions from then-Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, a deviation was made, permitting the construction of two-bedroom (2-BHK) flats at Sheikhpora and Vessu, instead of the originally planned 1-BHK units. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had conveyed that any additional cost resulting from this modification would have to be borne by the Union Territory government.

Addressing concerns over inadequate accommodation and the demand for revisiting the project structure, the government categorically stated that no proposal to reconsider or restore the earlier plan is under consideration at present.
