Jammu, July 15: Scores of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers and local residents, led by senior party leader and in-charge of Nagrota assembly constituency Amit Kapoor, staged a strong protest on Monday against the construction of a new toll plaza on the Jammu-Akhnoor Road.
Addressing the protesters, Kapoor questioned the rationale behind the new toll plaza, pointing out that government norms stipulate there should be no other toll plaza within a sixty-kilometre stretch. “Why is this toll plaza being installed despite that?” he asked.
Recalling previous public opposition to the Sarore toll plaza, which was eventually removed due to the poor condition of the road, Kapoor said the people of Jammu had already suffered under multiple toll plazas and now faced yet another burden.
He also criticised the proliferation of liquor shops across Jammu, known as the “city of temples,” alleging that residents are being exploited by overcharging at these outlets. “First, Jammu was made a city of toll plazas; then, a city of liquor,” Kapoor said, adding that the new toll plaza amounts to “another attempt to loot people.”
Kapoor declared that the AAP would launch a larger movement if authorities did not withdraw the plan, asserting: “We will not allow this toll plaza to be set up on Jammu-Akhnoor Road at any cost.”
Among those who joined the protest were senior party leaders Er Harpreet Singh, Jayesh Gupta, Gurmeet Singh, Suresh Bhagat, Amrik Singh Sassan, Dixit Gupta, Shakeel Baniya, Joginder Singh, Rohit Bali, Ranjeet Singh Goldy, Amrik Singh, Parminder Singh, Talwinder Singh, Gurjeet Singh and others
