Over 500 Passengers Rescued After Mumbai Monorail Gets Stuck Mid-Air Amid Heavy Rain

MUMBAI, Aug 19: More than 500 passengers were stranded for over two hours after a Mumbai monorail train halted between Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park stations on Tuesday evening due to a technical snag amid heavy rainfall.

The incident occurred around 6:15 pm when the train, running on an elevated track, suffered a minor power supply issue. Rescue teams from the fire brigade, MMRDA, and municipal corporation, assisted by cranes, carried out evacuation operations to bring passengers to safety.

A passenger, describing the ordeal, said:
“I was in the train from 5:30 PM. The rescue operation started after an hour. There were at least 500 passengers, and since the train arrived after a gap of 30 minutes, it was completely overcrowded.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who was closely monitoring the situation, assured passengers of their safety.
“Due to some technical reason, a monorail is stuck between Chembur and Bhakti Park. The highest priority is being given to the safety of all passengers. No one should panic, all will be safely evacuated. I am in contact with MMRDA, the Municipal Commissioner, the police, and all relevant agencies. An inquiry will also be conducted,” Fadnavis said in a tweet.

Officials confirmed that all passengers were safely evacuated. Some of them, who complained of uneasiness and minor injuries, were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The incident has once again raised questions on the reliability of the Mumbai Monorail, which has witnessed repeated technical glitches since its launch.
