New Delhi, Aug 22: In a move aimed at discouraging the use of old vehicles, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has announced a steep hike in registration renewal fees for motor vehicles older than 20 years.
According to a notification issued by the ministry, the renewal fee for light motor vehicles (LMVs) older than 20 years has been doubled to ₹10,000 from the earlier ₹5,000. For motorcycles in the same category, the renewal cost has been increased from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000, while for three-wheelers and quadricycles it will now cost ₹5,000, up from ₹3,500.
Imported vehicles will attract much higher renewal costs: ₹20,000 for two- and three-wheelers, and ₹80,000 for four-wheelers or more.
The draft amendment was issued in February this year and finalised on August 21. The ministry had earlier revised renewal fees in October 2021.
The latest hike comes against the backdrop of an ongoing debate on phasing out older vehicles to curb pollution. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court directed authorities not to take coercive action against owners of diesel vehicles more than 10 years old and petrol vehicles older than 15 years in Delhi-NCR, after the Delhi government urged the court to consider actual vehicle usage rather than just the manufacturing year under the end-of-life vehicle policy.
Officials said the move is part of the Centre’s push towards greener mobility and to encourage owners of ageing vehicles to switch to newer, more efficient, and less polluting options.
