JAMMU, Sept 4: Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology & Environment, and Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana, on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting to review the progress of water supply restoration across Jammu province in the aftermath of recent flash floods, incessant rainfall, and landslides.
The Minister assessed the status of key installations and commended the tireless efforts of the Jal Shakti Department staff and engineers, particularly for restoring operations at the Tawi Filtration Plant, Dhounthly, which resumed functioning late last night. He directed that potable water from the plant be supplied to areas including Panjthirthi, Mubarak Mandi, Ustad Mohalla, Kachi Chowani, Jain Bazar, and Zulaka Mohalla.
Rana also reviewed the 600 mm diameter rising main from Sitlee to Lohar, which had suffered major damage, and instructed engineers to expedite its restoration. He assured residents of Janipur, Roopnagar, Bantalab, Keran Swarn Vihar, Muthi, and Indra Colony, who have faced intermittent water supply, that full restoration would be ensured at the earliest.
Taking serious note of the situation concerning the Sitlee–Manda rising main, which supplies water to Old City, New Plot, Rehari, Bakshi Nagar, and adjoining areas, the Minister directed engineering teams to work round-the-clock to restore this vital supply line.
The meeting was also briefed on the status of tube wells in Jammu. Out of 255 installations, 240 are currently functional, with restoration of the remaining 15 expected within the next two days. To meet immediate requirements, the Minister ordered the deployment of 90 water tankers across severely affected zones.
In addition, Rana directed the establishment of a 24/7 control room to address public grievances and complaints promptly. He reiterated the Government’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted supply of safe drinking water and emphasized that all efforts must be focused on mitigating hardships and restoring normalcy at the earliest.
