Srinagar, Sep 8: Education Minister Sakina Itoo on Monday said that while schools across the Jammu region are scheduled to reopen this week, nearly 40 institutions in flood-affected areas will remain closed until conditions improve.
When will schools reopen?
The minister said that the majority of schools will resume classes shortly, but reopening depends on safety checks. “We are trying to restore normal functioning as quickly as possible, but reopening will be allowed only once it is safe. We have to be sure that students’ health and education are not put at risk,” she said.
Which 40 schools will not reopen?
According to officials, the 40 schools that remain shut are located in the most flood-hit areas of Jammu, Samba, Kathua, and parts of Udhampur. Many of these schools had been converted into temporary shelters for displaced families, while others suffered from waterlogging and sanitation issues. Authorities said these schools will undergo cleaning and minor repairs before students can return.
What about the rest of the region?
Itoo clarified that the closure is limited only to flood-affected areas. Schools across other districts are functioning normally, ensuring that the broader education system continues without disruption.
