Ganderbal, Sep 29: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday reiterated that the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir is the fundamental right of its people, urging the Centre not to test their patience further.
Speaking to reporters, Abdullah warned that the situation in J&K could deteriorate swiftly if promises are delayed. “The situation here can change in a jiffy, but we do not want it to reach the level we are witnessing in Ladakh. Statehood is our right,” he said.
He reminded that the Government of India had already committed to restoring statehood, including assurances before the Supreme Court, and stressed that delimitation and elections are complete.
Reflecting on Ladakh’s experience, Abdullah said his party had warned that UT status might have unintended consequences. “Sadly, their lives have not improved under the new arrangement,” he remarked.
Abdullah concluded by reaffirming a peaceful, lawful pursuit of statehood, emphasizing constitutional engagement.
