Jammu, Oct 13: After more than six weeks of disruptions, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has restored two-way traffic for all vehicles on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway, the lifeline connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country. The highway, spanning 250 km, had been partially blocked since August 26 due to multiple landslides, road sinking, and damage caused by heavy rainfall, flash floods, and cloudbursts.
Traveling from Jammu to Srinagar:
For travelers starting from Jammu, the route now offers smoother and safer passage. Key stretches, including the vulnerable areas near Tharad Bridge and Balli Nallah in Udhampur, and Maroog in Ramban, have been repaired and blacktopped. The section near Tharad, between Udhampur and Chenani, which was previously about 300 meters of damaged road, has been fully restored as of October 5, allowing heavy motor vehicles (HMVs) and light vehicles to move freely. Commuters are advised to maintain caution while driving through the hilly terrain, especially in areas prone to waterlogging or sudden landslides.
Traveling from Srinagar to Jammu:
Travelers heading from Srinagar can now use the Lakhanpur–Jammu–Srinagar corridor without facing previous bottlenecks. With the repairs completed on previously affected stretches, congestion has been significantly reduced. NHAI has deployed monitoring and maintenance teams along the route to ensure smooth travel, and drivers are encouraged to follow traffic signage and drive responsibly, particularly in the mountainous sections.
Officials emphasized the highway’s importance during the ongoing fruit transport season, as trucks carrying apples and other perishable produce from the Valley can now reach markets on time, supporting both local farmers and traders.
NHAI had restored one-way traffic on September 10 but continued working tirelessly to ensure full two-way connectivity. The authority had also formally requested the local administration on October 9 to resume two-way traffic for all vehicles to prevent congestion and ensure seamless movement.
Travel tips for a safe journey:
- Keep an eye on traffic signs and maintain safe speeds, particularly along curves and hilly stretches.
- Be prepared for sudden weather changes; carry water, snacks, and emergency supplies.
- Allow extra travel time during peak hours, though traffic is expected to flow smoothly.
With the highway fully restored, commuters, transporters, and tourists can now enjoy a faster, safer, and more reliable journey between Jammu and Srinagar, making it easier to connect the Valley with the rest of the country.
