Addis Ababa, Dec 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday described India and Ethiopia as “natural partners” in promoting regional peace, security and connectivity, while addressing a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament during his maiden bilateral visit to the African nation.
Highlighting the strategic locations of the two countries, Modi said, “Ethiopia sits at a crossroads of Africa. India stands at the heart of the Indian Ocean. We are natural partners in regional peace, security and connectivity.”
The prime minister noted that as developing countries, India and Ethiopia have much to learn from each other and also have a great deal to offer in terms of shared experiences and cooperation. He also spoke of the cultural and people-to-people bonds between the two nations, saying they share warmth “both in climate and in spirit.”
Modi’s address marked the 18th parliament in the world that he has addressed, underscoring India’s growing parliamentary diplomacy and engagement with the Global South. His speech was met with a standing ovation from members of the Ethiopian Parliament at its conclusion.
Prime Minister Modi is on a four-day, three-nation tour. He arrived in Ethiopia on Tuesday from Jordan and will depart for Oman later during his visit.
