Somnath Reminds Us Sanatan Dharma Is Eternal, Not Erasable: Gaurav Gupta

Jammu, Jan 11: BJP Spokesperson and Convenor, International Affairs, BJP Jammu and Kashmir UT, Gaurav Gupta on Sunday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address at the Somnath Swabhiman Parv, marking 1,000 years since the first attack on the Somnath Temple, was a powerful reaffirmation of Bharat’s civilisational resilience, Sanatan values and unbroken spiritual strength.

Describing Somnath as much more than a monument, Gupta said the temple represents the soul of Hindu faith, the continuity of Indian civilisation and the indomitable spirit of Bharat. He said repeated attempts by invaders over centuries to destroy the shrine failed to weaken India’s spiritual foundations.

“From Mahmud of Ghazni to Aurangzeb, repeated attempts were made to demolish Somnath with the misguided belief that destroying a temple would break India’s spirit. History has proved otherwise. Those invaders are confined to history, while Somnath continues to stand tall as a symbol of faith’s triumph,” Gupta said.

Referring to the Prime Minister’s remarks, Gupta said the history of Somnath is not one of defeat but of victory, renewal and resurgence. Despite repeated attacks, the temple never disappeared from the collective consciousness of Hindu society and survived through faith, memory and resolve, reflecting the eternal nature of Sanatan Dharma.

Gupta also highlighted the Prime Minister’s assertion that attempts were made over decades to portray attacks on Somnath merely as acts of plunder. “If wealth was the only motive, one attack would have been enough. The repeated desecration clearly points to an intent to assault Hindu identity and Indian civilisation,” he said.

Recalling the post-Independence reconstruction of the temple, Gupta said Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s resolve to rebuild Somnath as a symbol of national pride and civilisational self-respect faced resistance from forces driven by appeasement and ideological bias. He added that the Prime Minister cautioned that similar forces still exist and the nation must remain united and vigilant.

Gupta paid tribute to warriors such as Veer Hamirji Gohil and devotees who sacrificed their lives in defence of Somnath, saying initiatives like the Shaurya Yatra and Somnath Swabhiman Parv honour their courage and devotion.

Addressing the youth, Gupta said the Prime Minister’s message holds special significance for younger generations, urging them to stay connected with their dharma, history and cultural roots. “When the youth understand their history and heritage, no force can mislead or weaken the nation,” he said.

Concluding, Gupta said Somnath’s story mirrors India’s own journey—repeatedly attacked but never defeated. He said under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India is reclaiming its true history with pride, with Somnath standing today as a spiritual beacon and a symbol of India’s enduring faith and civilisation.
