ISLAMABAD, Jun 10: A Pakistan Army Aviation Mi-17 helicopter crashed near Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on Wednesday, killing all personnel on board, the military said.
In a statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan Army, confirmed that there were no survivors in the crash. However, it did not disclose the number of personnel who were aboard the helicopter at the time of the accident.
According to the ISPR, the helicopter crashed during take-off due to a technical fault.
“The accident occurred during take-off due to a technical fault,” the military said in a brief statement.
Rescue and recovery teams were immediately dispatched to the crash site and efforts were launched to retrieve the bodies and secure the area.
The military said a board of inquiry has been constituted to determine the exact cause of the accident and investigate the technical failure that led to the crash.
Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, along with all ranks of the Pakistan Army, expressed grief over the loss of lives.
“Field Marshal Asim Munir and all ranks of the Army express deep grief over the tragic loss of precious lives and extend heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” the ISPR statement said.
The latest crash is the second major military aviation accident reported in Pakistan within the past year.
In September 2025, five military personnel were killed when an Army helicopter crashed in the Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan, reportedly due to a technical fault.
Earlier, in August 2025, a helicopter operated by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government crashed in Mohmand district during adverse weather conditions, resulting in the deaths of two pilots and three crew members.
Authorities are awaiting the findings of the inquiry board to establish the precise circumstances that led to Wednesday’s fatal crash near Muzaffarabad.
