Winter’s Fierce Phase: Chillai-Kalan
The region is currently enduring Chillai-Kalan, the harshest 40-day period of winter that began on December 21. Known for its frigid temperatures and frequent snowfall, this phase is critical for replenishing water bodies fed by melting snow in the warmer months.
Chillai-Kalan concludes on January 30, followed by Chillai-Khurd (a 20-day milder cold phase) and Chillai-Bachha (a 10-day baby cold period).
Snow Tourism Shines Amid Harsh Weather
While the cold wave poses challenges for residents, the snow-covered landscapes of Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and other scenic spots continue to attract tourists, offering picturesque views and thrilling winter sports.
The Meteorological Department has predicted more snowfall and sub-zero temperatures in the coming days, urging residents to brace for colder weather while enjoying the beauty of Kashmir’s winter wonderland.
