SRINAGAR/SONAMARG, Jan 12: Security forces have intensified their efforts across Kashmir ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Sonamarg on Monday, where he will inaugurate the strategically vital Z-Morh tunnel in Ganderbal district.
Additional personnel have been deployed in vulnerable areas, with dozens of checkpoints established to prevent the movement of anti-national elements. Random checks, frisking of individuals and vehicles, and extensive patrolling are being carried out. Security at the Z-Morh tunnel is under multi-layered arrangements, with the Prime Minister’s Special Protection Group (SPG) taking charge of the venue.
“The area is being monitored round-the-clock with sharpshooters stationed at strategic points, and aerial surveillance using drones has been initiated,” officials said. The Srinagar-Leh highway has been closed for public use until Monday, officially citing icy road conditions, though many attribute the closure to security measures for the high-profile visit.
PM Modi Eager to Visit Sonamarg
Prime Minister Modi, responding to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s post on microblogging site X, expressed his anticipation for the visit. “I am eagerly awaiting my visit to Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir, for the tunnel inauguration. You rightly point out the benefits for tourism and the local economy. Also, loved the aerial pictures and videos!” PM Modi posted.
Earlier, CM Abdullah visited Sonamarg to oversee preparations and shared stunning aerial views of the tunnel and surrounding areas. “The inauguration of the Z-Morh tunnel will open Sonamarg to tourism all year round. Sonamarg will now be developed as a great ski resort. The local population will not have to leave in winter, and the travel time to Kargil and Leh from Srinagar will also reduce,” he said.
Engineering Marvel Transforming Regional Connectivity
The ₹2,716 crore Z-Morh tunnel, stretching 6.5 kilometers, ensures year-round connectivity between Gagangir and Sonamarg. Situated at an altitude of 8,650 feet, it features a two-lane main tunnel, an egress tunnel, and approach roads. This engineering marvel bypasses landslide-prone areas and guarantees safer access to Ladakh.
The project, initiated in 2015, faced delays but was completed last year, with a soft opening in February 2024. The tunnel is crucial for defense logistics and will enhance tourism in Sonamarg, transforming it into a year-round destination for adventure sports and winter activities.
The Prime Minister is expected to address a public rally following the tunnel’s inauguration. He will also meet the construction workers who braved harsh conditions to complete this feat, acknowledging their dedication and contributions.
The Z-Morh tunnel, along with the under-construction Zojila tunnel, is poised to revolutionize connectivity in the region. Once completed by 2028, the Zojila tunnel will reduce the route length from 49 km to 43 km and increase vehicle speeds from 30 km/hr to 70 km/hr, ensuring seamless NH-1 connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh.
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) called the tunnel a “game-changer,” stating, “This infrastructure marvel will unlock the region’s trade and tourism potential, boost defense logistics, and promote socio-economic growth across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.”
With heightened security and an air of anticipation, the inauguration of the Z-Morh tunnel marks a transformative step towards enhancing connectivity, boosting the economy, and strengthening national integration.
